Redundant keywords don't break your account overnight. They erode it. Budget splits where it shouldn't. Quality Score builds slowly on three parallel paths instead of quickly on one. The search terms report fills with noise. Then you wonder why CPCs keep climbing on keywords that used to be efficient.

Cleaning up redundancy is one of the faster performance levers available in a mature account — and it's one of the most commonly skipped because spotting it manually across a large keyword set takes longer than most account managers want to spend on it.

Two Types of Redundant Keywords

Before you start removing anything, it matters which type of redundancy you're dealing with. They have different causes and require different responses.

Type 1: True Duplicates

A true duplicate is the same keyword text and the same match type appearing in more than one ad group. For example: [running shoes] (exact) in the Brand Ad Group AND [running shoes] (exact) in the Product Ad Group.

These are almost always mistakes — the result of account growth over time, multiple people building campaigns, or importing without auditing first. When both keywords are live, Google's auction picks one. The selection isn't predictable in a useful way. Budget gets reserved for both, impressions land on one, and neither ad group builds clean signal.

Type 1 is not a strategy question. It's a cleanup job. There's no legitimate reason to run the same keyword text at the same match type in two separate ad groups simultaneously.

Type 2: Cross-Match Overlap

Cross-match overlap is the same keyword text running as more than one match type — most commonly broad, phrase, and exact all active at once. For example: running shoes (broad), "running shoes" (phrase), and [running shoes] (exact) all live in the same or separate ad groups.

This one requires judgment. Some advertisers do this intentionally — bidding higher on exact to capture high-intent traffic while letting phrase and broad fill the funnel at a lower bid. That's a real strategy. But in practice, most accounts with this pattern built it accidentally over time, and nobody is actively managing the bid differential or monitoring for cannibalization.

The key distinction: only Type 1 is always wrong. Type 2 may be intentional — but even when it is, it needs active management to stay intentional.

Why Redundancy Costs You

The concrete performance damage from redundant keywords falls into three areas.

Quality Score Dilution

Quality Score is calculated per keyword per ad group. It's built from accumulated signals: click-through rate, ad relevance, and landing page experience. When the same keyword runs in two ad groups, clicks split between them. Each ad group gets half the data it would otherwise accumulate. Slower signal accumulation means slower QS improvement — which means higher CPCs and worse auction positioning on both versions.

This compounds over time. A keyword you've been running for six months in one ad group might be at QS 8. That same keyword split across two ad groups for six months is probably at QS 5 in both. The CPC difference between QS 5 and QS 8 on a competitive term is not trivial.

Budget Cannibalization

Two ad groups with the same keyword don't split your budget cleanly — they compete for it inefficiently. Google's system has to decide, on each auction, which version to enter. The budget isn't pooled and applied to the winning version; it's reserved separately for each, with delivery optimized across both in ways you can't fully observe. The net result is less efficient delivery: you're paying overhead for Google to manage the internal competition you created.

In Smart Bidding campaigns, this is worse. The algorithm is trying to optimize toward a target CPA or ROAS, but it's working with fragmented, split signals from both ad groups. It can't tell that the two keywords are functionally the same thing — it sees them as separate optimization targets.

Reporting Opacity

If [running shoes] is in three ad groups, your search term report becomes a noise problem. The same query triggers in all three, and the conversion data — which ad copy, which landing page, which bid — gets scattered across all three rows. You can't cleanly answer "is this keyword working?" because "this keyword" isn't a single entity anymore. It's three separate records that happen to share text.

A/B testing ad copy becomes meaningless when you can't isolate which ad group is getting the impressions. Landing page optimization loses signal for the same reason. Redundancy turns reporting into archaeology instead of analysis.

How to Find Redundant Keywords Manually

The manual approach works. It's just slow at scale.

  1. Export your keyword report from Google Ads. Include all campaigns, all ad groups. The columns you need: Campaign Name, Ad Group Name, Keyword Text, Match Type. Export as CSV.
  2. Open in a spreadsheet (Google Sheets or Excel).
  3. Create a key column for true duplicates: =LOWER(TRIM(A2))&"|"&B2 where A is keyword text and B is match type. This normalizes capitalization and whitespace and concatenates keyword + match type into a single lookup key.
  4. Sort by the key column. Any key that appears more than once is a true duplicate — same text, same match type, multiple ad groups.
  5. Highlight duplicates using conditional formatting or a COUNTIF formula: =COUNTIF($C:$C,C2)>1.

For cross-match overlap, run a second pass: create a column with just the normalized keyword text (no match type appended), sort by that, and look for rows where the same text appears across multiple match types.

This catches the obvious cases. What it misses: close variants that Google treats as equivalent, extra whitespace the TRIM doesn't catch, capitalization differences in match type labels across export formats, and the sheer time cost of doing this across a keyword set with thousands of terms. A 500-keyword account takes 20 minutes. A 5,000-keyword account takes the better part of an afternoon.

What to Do With What You Find

Finding redundancy is the easy part. The decisions about what to remove require a little more thought.

For Type 1: True Duplicates

The goal is simple: one ad group, one instance of the keyword. Which ad group you keep it in matters.

  • Check Quality Score before deciding which to keep. Pull the QS for each version. Don't automatically keep the oldest one — keep the one with the higher QS, because that's where the accumulated signal lives. If they're equal, pick the ad group that's a better structural fit for the keyword.
  • Pause, don't delete, the ones you're removing. At least initially. If something breaks — impression share drops unexpectedly, a campaign goes dark — you want the ability to restore quickly. Paused keywords don't affect delivery but can be reactivated without rebuilding history.
  • Check ad copy relevance in the surviving ad group. If you're consolidating a keyword from an ad group where the copy was tightly themed to the keyword text into an ad group where it's more generic, you may need to update the ads. Moving a keyword shouldn't mean accepting a worse ad relevance score.

For Type 2: Cross-Match Overlap

This one starts with a strategy question: is the match type layering intentional?

If yes — you're running exact at a higher bid to maximize impression share on high-intent queries while broad fills the top of funnel at lower CPCs — then keep the structure but make sure it's actually managed. Each match type variation should have a different bid, each should have distinct ad copy if they're in separate ad groups, and you should be actively monitoring the search terms report for cannibalization (queries that could trigger either match type landing on the lower-priority one).

If no — the keyword just accumulated multiple match types over time and nobody is actively managing the differential — then consolidation is almost always the right call. The typical rule: pick one match type per keyword per campaign and remove the others.

  • If you're on Smart Bidding, the case for match type layering is weaker than it used to be. Google's auction now handles a significant portion of what advertisers used to manage manually through match type selection. Consolidating to exact or phrase match and letting Smart Bidding do the rest often simplifies without sacrificing coverage.
  • If you're on manual CPC, layered match types with explicit bid differentials can still be a useful lever — but only if you're actively managing it. If the bids are the same across match types, the layering is costing you structural complexity without the corresponding benefit.
  • When consolidating match types, keep the most restrictive match type that still delivers sufficient volume. Exact is preferable to phrase if volume supports it. Phrase is preferable to broad unless you specifically need broad's expanded reach.

After Cleanup

Give the surviving keywords time to settle before drawing conclusions. After removing duplicates, the remaining keywords will see higher individual click volumes — they're now capturing what used to be split across multiple ad groups. That click concentration is what you want.

  • Wait 2–4 weeks before evaluating QS movement. Quality Score responds to accumulated data, not to structural changes in isolation.
  • Monitor your search terms report in the first two weeks. Occasionally, a keyword that was being "absorbed" by a duplicate in another ad group was actually doing useful filtering work — you may need to add negatives to compensate.
  • Watch impression share. If it drops after removing a duplicate, that's a signal that the removed keyword was winning auctions the surviving one isn't — investigate bid levels and ad relevance before assuming the consolidation was wrong.

The right keyword list isn't the biggest one — it's the one that gives the algorithm clean signal. Redundant keywords add noise, not coverage. A quarterly cleanup pass takes less time than diagnosing the performance degradation they cause, and with the right tooling it takes minutes, not hours.
